Research on search behavior
To come to the prediction, 24Baby.en analyzed the behavior of visitors. This is how searches were viewed within 24Baby’s special Babynamentool.nl and on Google. In addition, the forum and 24Baby’s app looked at what names parents gave their babies in the past six months.
Based on this we made a prediction of the names that will be most popular next year.
Baby name trends
The research reveals a number of trends around baby names. This shows what parents consider important when looking for a baby name. Some popular trends:
Short, tough names
Baby names will be cool and short this year, both for boys and girls. Unisex names are also gaining popularity. These are considered extra cool by many parents.
Traditional Dutch names
Names like Jan and Mees are becoming more and more popular. Especially outside the Randstad, the traditional Dutch names are very popular.
Frisian influences
Readers of 24Baby.nl searched remarkably often for ‘Frisian girls’ names. This possibly means that there will be more Frisian influences among the most popular baby names in 2021.
The 24Baby Babynamentool
In the Babynamentool of 24Baby, expectant parents of more than 3.500 baby names find origin and meaning. You can also find how common a name is in the Netherlands. Use the ‘Surprise me’ button to get a random name.
Here’s how to find names you might not have thought of yourself. The tool is used over a million times a month.
Names stay pretty much the same
Here we chose short names for our sons. This is not intentional, but we figured out very quickly what it would be. They are not trendy names. What strikes me in the list of the baby names of 2021 is that some of these names were already popular with my children (now 12 and 10).
Even now they have children in the class with many of these names from this list. So in recent years the trend remains pretty much the same, as stated above.
